(Punditcy.com) – “Top journalists from The New York Times, NBC News and CNN acknowledged Wednesday that, generally speaking, the national media has a liberal bias,” Politico’s media reporter Dylan Byers noted in a December 18 post recapping a Politico Playbook breakfast discussion held earlier on Wednesday morning.
[image src=”http://punditcy.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/MediaBias.png” width=”250px” lightbox=”no” frame=”light” align=”left” float=”left”]The fact that the mainstream media has a bias does not come as much of a surprise. It is kind of entertaining watching how hesitant they are to admit the bias.  Of course, once the cat was out of the bag, they did offer up a defense that falls in line with most liberal excuses — it’s the environment we live in. Essentially, their work life and private lives are surrounded by fellow socially liberal minded people. No mention of a moral obligation to tell the truth.
Washington D.C. journalist Jake Trapper also offered up and explanation in which he stated, “you don’t see a lot of coverage about poverty, you don’t see a lot of coverage about troops, you don’t see a lot of coverage about faith — it’s simplistic to say it’s about liberal or conservative. It’s about experiences and lifestyles and there needs to be more of getting outside our comfort zone.” Another panelist admitted that if they did surveys, more reporters would identify themselves as liberal then not. Wow, we are shocked.

Why this bias, or selective reporting based on “experiences”, is harmful to our country I do not believe these panelists understand. The gravity of their biased reporting escapes them. The Founding Fathers understood that a free-press would keep tabs on a government that many feared would become too powerful for the people to control. When a very powerful press has the same leanings as those who are in control of the government, then there is no public check. Exactly what is happening today in the mainstream media. One just needs to look a the coverage of the scandals that have plagued the Obama Administration. These instances are just examples of how the press has carried their prejudices to excess and in many respects has degenerated into licentiousness. Lawyer Thomas McKean had a warning for us, more than applicable today,
“The true liberty of the press is amply secured by permitting every man to publish his opinion; but it is due to the peace and dignity of society, to inquire into the motives of such publications, and to distinguish between those which are meant for use and reformation, and with an eye solely to the public good, and those which are intended merely to delude and defame. To the latter description, it is impossible that any good government should afford protection and impunity.”
How can we trust a press to protect the people when, admittedly, their political bias aligns with the institution they are chartered to protect us against. Short answer… we can’t, and we shouldn’t.
